Our SchoolThe year 2003 is very significant for our school, The Senior High School No. 40. First of all, we have an important anniversary, namely the school is 10 years old. During those 10 years a lot has changed. The school has changed the building, which now belongs to us. It is very spacious and built of red bricks, which are said to be healthy. It is placed in a calm and peaceful neighbourhood. The school has also developed. Although I am not very concerned about technological issues and newest computer inventions, I know that the school follows them. I’m not talking about access to the Internet, which is obvious, but the access is permanent and for free. Except this there are many advanced computer programmes to learn about and to use. The school provides many facilities for all groups of interest. In my opinion the most interesting are physics labs. Not only are they conducted in our school, but also they take place at the Technical School of Warsaw. For people with artistic soul there is a wide range of activities to choose from. For instance there is a special room, where pupils and teachers play musical instruments. But if you in music room feel like bull in a china shop then you can take part in a school theatre or simply listen about history of cinema or theatre. If you are full of energy you can join up trekking club (last summer the member of it reached the highest peaks, and those lowerones, of the Tatra Mountains in Slovakia) or wandering group (the members can wander many kilometres even if the weather conditions are the worst.) The only thing that hasn’t changed is teachers and actually their attitude to learning. They are really patient and friendly, and strict however. Of course there were some ‘teachers’ that weren’t especially popular. With this year another event is connected. Because the school has 10th anniversary the head master wants to choose a patron for the school. Secretly, or maybe not, I know that the most serious candidate is Gustaw Herling-Grudziński. In my opinion the choice is not very good, unless the head master wants to widen the list of foreign languages and adds Italian and Russian to it. Better choice will be, of course only in my opinion, Witold Gombrowicz. In his famous book there is presented a lesson, during which pupils were forced to admire Słowacki, even if they didn’t understand his poetry. Obviously, the author was against such education. In our school we are explained with patience why Juliusz Słowacki was a great writer. This year the school for the first time took part in a contest introduced by popular magazine “Perspektywy”. The debut occurred to be a success.
This photo shows our school and other buildings in the neighbourhood. In the front of it you can see a car- park, which is not crowded yet. It is only because the photo was taken during lesson. Normally, during break, it is the most popular place in the school, which almost every pupil has visited. This car-park is naturally used by drivers as well as by smokers who adopted it as a “smoking-place”. As I said it is a very popular place among students. Not only can you meet there almost everyone, even non-smokers, but also you can take part in discussion (for high level of it none can have warranty). Every year we have a festival, an artistic festival. There is a lot of music to hear. Some pieces of music are really good, but other… well simply the quality of some presentation isn’t the best (just like in one song; everybody can sing - better or worse). Every year during festival we can see a theatre performance. Every year the spectacle is a big success. Last year it was entilted “Świnka.” The results from the last year you can see below.
