Golden rules and good adviceAs we all know, tests and different kind of exams are the things that make students nervous or scared. I am a student too, and I have experienced it myself. At various times I was so upset before receiving the test that I even got a stomachache. I was often aware of the fact, that many things depend entirely on how I write the exam: my final mark, my relations with mum or the amount of my pocket money. When I started the seventh grade in my elementary school, I introduced a few basic rules, which could help me not only to get the whole stress under control, but also to study more carefully and profitably. Also, I tried to understand our teachers and to find their weak points. Ever since that time my learning process is easier, more enjoyable and just more…productive! There are, of course, situations when my lines do not work but that is obvious. It would be unnatural never to experience stress, wouldn’t it? What do my principles look like? How to put them into practice? How to unravel high-school teacher’s behavior? Nothing more easy, believe me! First of all, you have to find out which method of studying is best for you. You need to decide whether it is enough for you just to read, or to make your private notes at the side too. Think about the way that helps you most to acquire the knowledge. Are you a visualizer or a good listener? Try to answer yourself that question, because many people record the assignment they have to know on tape and then learn by hearing it. Think if that would help you. If you decide to write down the important material, make your notes clear and understandable. Second of all, control your emotions, do not let the stress dominate you. If you have the feeling of being well prepared for the lesson or test, there is no need to worry at all! It will only make you feel worse and there is a possibility that you forget what you have already learned. Stay calm, breathe steadily and be self–confident. Even if you did not study the previous day, being disturbed is not a solution. You can always write the test one more time, and if not, you just have to accept that. You are a human being and you have a right to have worse days. Just do not let them appear too often. Teachers are usually understanding if you are nice to them. Plus: you sometimes even have a chance to get prepared with their help and engagement. A very imporant thing that may help you at our place, is to have a good, pleasant relationship with the professors here. You need not only to behave in a kind and appropiate way but also to be a litlle crafty, smart or cunning. Let’s take our Polish teacher, Mr. Skrobecki. He is a funny, composed person who is always available upon our requests, if only we approach him in a nice, gentle way. Along with all that we talk about how overworked we are, how many subjects we are obliged to study, and there has never been a situation that he did not take pity on us. Well, it maybe happened once. We all co–operate and jointly make “poor fellows” out of ourselves. And that is our huge secret. A different teacher, Mrs. Judyta (Business Lessons), is all the time derided by us. We follow up our advantage which reveals in the shrewdness that most of us have. We infinitely use her credulity to our purposes. That is why we sometimes have shorter lessons than they are supposed to be, we have one test for a few months and we feel extremely careless and free. But there are of course teachers who have already got to the bottom of our crafts. We sometimes try to appease them wit a huge, true smile but if it does not work, we have no courage to try again. It also happens that we are candidly scared. A great example of those schoolmasters are: Mr. Kostyra (English), Mrs. Urbańska (Maths), Mrs. Handzlik (Physics) and Mr. Choiński (History). That is our school’s Big Four. As we can all see, our high school looks just like the other ones, which refers to the student’s tricks towards teachers. It has always been like that, it is now and it will stay forever. Student’s try to be more clever than the professors are. I truly hope and believe, that all the advice and prompts included in my work, are going to help different students with studying or will make their school life easier. I wish you good luck and a lot of…smartness. Author: Alexandra Grostad 3a
