European  Union

European  Union is the organization of  European  countries. There are 15 Member States: 1950: France, Belgium, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, 1973: Denmark, Ireland, United Kingdom, 1981: Greece, 1986: Spain, Portugal, 1995: Austria, Finland and Sweden.

      European Union was set up after World War II on 9 May 1950.

It is based on the rule of law and democracy. The Union is established in order to bring monetary and political community. In EU there are five institutions, each of them playing an important role:

  European Parliament – people of the Member States elect it.

  Council of the Union – it is composed of governments of the Member States.

   European Commission – it is a driving force and executive body.

   Court of Justice – it guarantees compliance with the law.

  Court of Auditors – which is sound and lawful management of the EU budget.

The Union has principal objectives:

    to establish European citizenship – civil and political rights, fundamental rights and freedom of movement; to ensure freedom, security and justice – cooperation in the field of justice and home affairs; to promote economic and social progress – single market, euro (the common currency), workplace creation, regional development, environmental protection; to assert Europe’s role in the world – common foreign policy and security, the European union in the world.

 European Union anthem is the fourth part of  XI  symphony  of  Ludwig van  Beethoven Ode to Joy.

 The national flag of EU has blue background which contains  12 starlets – this is the model of 12 hours , 12 months, 12 Apostles and it  means  harmony and excellence.
